Gibson and Radford are steeped in history and have been working in this traditional art of restoration since 1976. Having started out in a former doctor’s surgery in Putney it was decided to keep the title of The Surgery Workshop. They soon established firm ties with all the reputable dealers in the Kings Road and Pimlico Road area, offering restoration services to the antiques trade. They also established a large clientele with private houses and collectors through recommendation and referrals. This then lead to working more closely with influential Interior designers and property developers on more extensive projects. Our clients included Old Battersea House, Forbes, Kensington Palace, Buckingham Palace, Wren House, The Guinness Family, but also they have also established a large number of furniture enthusiasts offering expert knowledge at a competitive market rate.

To give you a further inside view of the company’s service and standards. Jake Radford was commissioned by Harrods of Knightsbridge to repair “damaged furniture” to "original" condition. All Gibson and Radford restoration work is carried out using these traditional methods and materials. When required, modern finishes can be applied to reproduction and quality furniture, as well as lager items such as panelling and staircases. When having restoration work done, Jake Radford recommends that you make sure the correct finish is applied in keeping with the piece. Some restorers use modern glues, fillers and lacquers as a short cut to achieve a “showroom finish”, but the reality is, there may be a devaluating effects and the finish may be inappropriate for the age of the furniture.

The skill of our restorers is to maintain the furniture’s character and charm, and to preserve the patina that has built up over the years.
